HONEYCUTT FAMILY RECEIVES NEW HOME BY GOD’S PIT CREW IN NEW “COMMUNITY OF HOPE”
Jamie and Shannon Honeycutt receive fully furnished home after displacement from Hurricane Helene.
DANVILLE, VA. (October 28, 2026) – After more than two years of displacement following Hurricane Helene, Jamie and Shannon Honeycutt recently stepped through the doors of a brand-new home in Nebo, North Carolina – one filled not only with furniture and appliances, but with thoughtful details prepared especially for their family.
The Honeycutt home is the second completed house in the new “Community of Hope,” an eight-home neighborhood taking shape through the partnership of God’s Pit Crew, Samaritan’s Purse, and the Ray and Kay Eckstein Charitable Trust for families impacted by Hurricane Helene.
As Shannon approached the home for the first time, God’s Pit Crew Co-Founder, Terri Johnson, reflected on the long road that had led to the moment.
“I know you thought, ‘Will this day ever come?’” Johnson said.
For the Honeycutts, that day arrived surrounded by many of the people who helped make it possible.
More than 100 God’s Pit Crew volunteers from across the nation contributed their time and labor to help construct and prepare the home. Standing before the completed house, Shannon shared her gratitude with those who had given so much to help her family step into this new chapter.
“I can’t say thank you enough,” Shannon said. “It started with just a simple prayer. You came and did this for us… I could never thank you enough.”
As the family began walking through the fully furnished home, some of the smallest details created some of the most meaningful moments.
At the dining table, Shannon reached out to touch the plates and napkins carefully arranged in place.
“Are these ours, too?” she asked.
“Everything is yours, baby. Everything is yours,” Johnson replied.
From the furniture and appliances to the dishes, cookware, cleaning supplies, and household essentials, the home had been completely prepared for the Honeycutt family before they ever walked through the door.
“Oh my goodness, pots and pans!” Shannon exclaimed as she continued into the kitchen and opened the drawers.
One guest bedroom even included a bassinet and special touches prepared for the family’s soon-arriving grandchild.
For Jamie, the space itself represented a major change from the camper where the couple had been living. He reflected on how difficult it had become to find room for their belongings, particularly their clothing. Inside their new home, each bedroom now offers a full closet and space they had gone without for so long.
But the significance of the home reaches far beyond additional room.
“It will give me back my retirement that washed down the river, because it was gone and I had no idea how I was ever gonna get it back,” Jamie remarked.
For the Honeycutts, Hurricane Helene brought unimaginable loss and uncertainty. Yet as Jamie reflected on the journey that brought his family to their new home, he returned again and again to faith.
“I’ve thought a lot about what to say, and really words can’t,” Jamie shared. “But all day, I’ve thought of the goodness of God and what He has done for me in my life and my family. When we lost everything… we didn’t know what to do. We both just went to praying. We never imagined all of this would come.”
He also offered a message directly to the volunteers, donors, and supporters who make God’s Pit Crew’s building ministry possible.
“To God’s Pit Crew: keep doing, because you don’t know all of the impact it truly does.”
The Honeycutt home is the second of eight planned homes within the “Community of Hope” in Nebo. Six additional families will ultimately receive homes within the community as construction continues in the months ahead.
The project is part of God’s Pit Crew’s broader long-term recovery work following Hurricane Helene. The ministry has now provided nearly 60 new homes to families in communities impacted by the storm, while additional homes continue to take shape in other regions.
Through its Building Projects ministry, God’s Pit Crew works alongside volunteers, donors, partners and local communities to provide fully constructed and fully furnished homes at no cost to families and individuals who have experienced severe disaster and loss.
