VOLUNTEERS ASSEMBLE IN SPRUCE PINE TO BUILD A NEW HOME FOR FAMILY IMPACTED BY HURRICANE HELENE
DANVILLE, VA. (April 20, 2026) – God’s Pit Crew volunteers will assemble in the mountains of Western North Carolina over the next two weeks to complete a remarkable mission of hope for Matthew and Jerri Young, a family whose lives were forever changed by Hurricane Helene.
The week of April 20, 2026, in Spruce Pine, North Carolina, volunteers will construct a brand-new three-bedroom, two-bathroom home for the Young family on their property, after their previous home was left unsafe and unlivable after the storm. The home was first framed and prayed over inside God’s Pit Crew headquarters in Danville, Virginia, before being carefully transported by truck to the family’s mountain homesite.
Over the course of a mere two weeks, volunteers will work to fully complete the home – building the structure, painting, and transforming the interior into a warm and welcoming place for the family to begin again. The home will be furnished with appliances, furniture, linens, and even framed family portraits, creating a true home before the Young family walks through the front door.
“This project is about so much more than walls and a roof,” said God’s Pit Crew President Randy Johnson. “It’s about restoring hope to a family who has walked through incredible loss and reminding them that God has not forgotten them. Our volunteers are honored to serve Matthew, Jerri, and their family.”
Matthew and Jerri’s story has been one of heartbreak and faith. After Hurricane Helene devastated their community, the Youngs returned home to find their property severely damaged, including the collapse of a retaining wall leaving their house unsafe to live in. Even while navigating their own loss, they continued serving others in their community by clearing debris, helping neighbors, and supporting their church’s relief efforts.
Reflecting on the journey, Jerri Young shared, “We chose to let God show us daily what He wanted us to do, and where He wanted us to go. After many months of trust, God kept His promise. He never left us, and He did not forsake us. He sent us His own ‘Pit Crew’ to reestablish a new home in the mountains.”
This home marks the 46th home God’s Pit Crew has provided for families and individuals impacted by Hurricane Helene across the Southeast.
The completed home is tentatively scheduled to be revealed to the family for the very first time the weekend of Friday, May 1, in what promises to be a deeply emotional and hope-filled moment. The definitive reveal day and time will be announced at a later date by God’s Pit Crew.
Media personnel are invited to attend and capture this special day as the Young family receives the keys to their new fully furnished home.
